# GitBook builds docs sites. artifact.guru gives each AI file a link.

GitBook is a polished docs platform, with Git Sync, change requests, AI answers and an MCP server for agents. artifact.guru gives each thing your AI makes its own link, runs HTML and React as real pages, and shows who opened it.

## Pick GitBook if

- You publish product or API docs as a branded site, synced both ways with GitHub or GitLab.
- You want change requests, reviews and preview deployments before anything goes live.
- You want an AI assistant and an MCP server on your docs so users and agents get answers.

## Pick artifact.guru if

- You need one link for one AI-made page, deck or prototype, not a whole docs site.
- Reviewers should open it from an email invite, and you want to see who opened it.
- You want unlimited links and your own subdomain for $12 a month.

## GitBook and artifact.guru, row by row

| Question | GitBook | artifact.guru |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Publish from AI agents | GitBook MCP (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor) edits sites and pages; CLI, API; read-only docs MCP | Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Gemini CLI, Grok and any MCP app, over OAuth; no API keys |
| Upload it yourself | Drag files into a section’s Library, up to 100 MB each; import Markdown, Word and more | Drag in files, or a whole folder for a built site or React app |
| What opens in the browser | Docs pages, API references, images; other files open on click; embeds via Iframely | HTML, React, Markdown, PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, images, diagrams, zipped sites |
| Who can open a link | Public; share links from Essential; visitor sign-in via Okta, Azure AD, Auth0 on Ultimate | Private, public or secret code on every plan; email invites (up to 50) on paid plans |
| Who opened it | Page views, visitors, top pages, referrers; search analytics and ratings from Essential | Paid plans: names on email links; counts, sources and devices on the rest |
| Updates and versions | Version history and rollback; change requests with reviews and preview deployments | Every change is a new version at the same link; roll back any time (Free keeps 3) |
| Your own domain | Custom domain from Essential; a subdirectory like example.com/docs on Ultimate | Your subdomain for public and secret-code links, from $12 a month |
| Team workspace | Seven roles from guest to admin, each a paid seat; site visitors don’t take seats | Team: one workspace, admins and members, a project per client, comments you can assign |
| Price | Free $0 (1 user); Essential $65, Ultimate $249/site/month + $12/user, yearly; $79, $299, $15 monthly (USD) | Free $0; Individual $12/month; Team $30/month for 3 editors, then $8 each |

## Where GitBook is good

- Git Sync keeps docs in two-way sync with GitHub or GitLab, and change requests add reviews, merge rules and preview deployments.
- Every published site gets llms.txt, Markdown versions and its own read-only MCP server, so AI tools can read and query your docs.
- GitBook MCP lets Claude Code, Codex and Cursor create sites, open change requests and edit pages, and site visitors never count as paid seats.

## Where artifact.guru is different

- Each AI-made file gets its own link. HTML, React components and zipped sites run as real pages, and Word, PowerPoint and PDF open in the browser.
- Every artifact starts private. Switch it to email invites for up to 50 people, an 8-character secret code that can expire, or public, at the same link.
- Email links show who opened, when, how often and who hasn’t. Public and code links show counts, where visitors came from and devices.
- Individual is $12 a month for unlimited links and your own subdomain. Team is $30 for 3 editors.

## Moving over from GitBook

1. Keep product docs in GitBook. Publish one-off AI pages, decks and prototypes to artifact.guru instead of starting new sites.
2. Add artifact.guru as a remote MCP server in Claude, Codex or Gemini CLI and approve it once in the browser.
3. Invite reviewers by email first, then switch the same link to public or put it on your subdomain when it’s ready.

## Questions

### Who counts as a paid seat?

On GitBook’s paid plans, every member of your organization is a paid seat, readers and guests included, on top of the site plan. Visitors to a published site are not members, and page views are unlimited. artifact.guru Team is $30 a month with 3 editors included, then $8 each.

### Can my AI agent publish to GitBook?

Yes. GitBook MCP lets Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and other MCP clients create sites, draft content in change requests and edit pages, and there is a CLI too. On artifact.guru, agents publish over MCP from Claude, Codex, Gemini CLI and Grok; there is no CLI or REST API.

### How do I limit who can read?

GitBook has share links from Essential and visitor sign-in through Okta, Azure AD, Auth0, AWS Cognito or OIDC on Ultimate. artifact.guru uses email invites, secret codes that can expire, or public links, and it has no viewer SSO.

### What does a custom domain cost?

GitBook includes a custom domain from Essential, $65 per site/month billed yearly or $79 monthly. artifact.guru puts public and secret-code links on your subdomain on any paid plan, from $12 a month.
