# A Workplane alternative for Word, decks and your own domain

Workplane is free and built for agents: folders of files, named versions, inline comments and MCP tools that write any file. artifact.guru renders Word and PowerPoint, can put links on your own domain, and shows who opened each email link.

## Pick Workplane if

- You want it free. Workplane charges nothing today.
- Your agent works in folders and needs ls, read, write and edit on single files.
- Reviewers should comment inline and agents should pick up from the same files.

## Pick artifact.guru if

- You send Word files, PowerPoint decks or React components and want them rendered.
- You want to see who opened each email link, and who hasn’t yet.
- You want links on your own domain, with secret codes that can expire.

## Workplane and artifact.guru, row by row

| Question | Workplane | artifact.guru |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Publish from AI agents | Remote MCP, 12 tools (Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, Devin and more), plus HTTP publish | Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Gemini CLI, Grok and any MCP app, over OAuth; no API keys |
| Upload it yourself | Not documented | Drag in files, or a whole folder for a built site or React app |
| What opens in the browser | Markdown, HTML and PDFs render as pages, plus images; each artifact is a folder of files | HTML, React, Markdown, PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, images, diagrams, zipped sites |
| Who can open a link | Private or public; grant named users editor or viewer roles; HTTP publishes are public | Private, public or secret code on every plan; email invites (up to 50) on paid plans |
| Who opened it | Not documented | Paid plans: names on email links; counts, sources and devices on the rest |
| Updates and versions | Named, immutable snapshots with their own addresses; roll back to a saved version | Every change is a new version at the same link; roll back any time (Free keeps 3) |
| Your own domain | Not documented | Your subdomain for public and secret-code links, from $12 a month |
| Team workspace | Per-artifact editor and viewer roles; no team workspace documented | Team: one workspace, admins and members, a project per client, comments you can assign |
| Price | Free for individuals; terms say the service is free for now and paid features may come later | Free $0; Individual $12/month; Team $30/month for 3 editors, then $8 each |

## Where Workplane is good

- Each artifact is a real folder of files, and agents can list, read, write, edit and remove files over MCP, or download it all as a zip.
- Named versions are immutable snapshots with their own addresses, so a reviewer can point at exactly what they read.
- It’s free for individuals with no card, and readers open shared pages without an account, signing in only to comment.

## Where artifact.guru is different

- Word, PowerPoint and React render in the browser, along with PDFs, images, Markdown with Mermaid and Excalidraw, and zipped sites, up to 100 MB a file.
- Four ways to share one link: Private, Email for up to 50 named addresses, an 8-character Secret code that can expire, or Public. New artifacts always start private.
- Email links show each person who opened, when and how often, and who hasn’t opened yet. Public and code links show counts, referrers and devices.
- Your own domain and a team workspace: public and code links on a subdomain like docs.yourcompany.com, plus admins, members and shared projects on Team.

## Moving over from Workplane

1. Use Workplane’s downloadZip tool to save each artifact you want to move.
2. Drag the files or folder into artifact.guru, or ask your agent to publish them over MCP.
3. Set who can open each link, then share the new URL.

## Questions

### Is Workplane free?

Yes. Workplane is free for individuals, and its terms say the service is free for now, with paid features possible later. artifact.guru has a Free plan with 3 live links and paid plans from $12 a month.

### Can people comment on artifact.guru pages?

Yes. People in your workspace and people you invite by email can comment, and agents read and resolve those comments over MCP. Comments sit in a panel beside the page rather than inline, and visitors on public or secret-code links don’t see them. Workplane has inline comments, and readers sign in to leave one.

### Can my agent edit one file at a time?

On Workplane, yes: its MCP tools read, write and edit individual files by path. On artifact.guru, an agent edits HTML or Markdown, each edit becomes a new version, and it never overwrites a change someone else made in between.

### Do viewers need an account?

Not for Public or Secret code links on artifact.guru. Email links ask each invited person to sign in with that address. On Workplane, readers can open shared pages without an account.
